Okay, so it's quarter 'til closing time, and a college girl who has been goofing off looking at CDs and surfing the web finally comes over and asks me if we have a book on a transportation curriculum for pre-schoolers. I look. We don't. I ask her how soon she needs it, because the teaching resource center at our main branch might be able to help her, but no, she needs it tonight, because it is due tomorrow! DUH! And she's going to be a teacher?! She says, "Well, I guess I'll just make something up!" That was probably what her teacher wanted anyway!

  Weights and Measures

When I went to the doctor last week, I had lost a couple more pounds since seeing her two weeks earlier, so I estimate that I now have 30 lbs. to lose. The weight is slowly, steadily coming off on Atkins, but I know that exercise will really help, so I'm trying to get to the gym more.

When the nurse weighed me, I also asked her to measure my height, and she told me that I'm 5'5". This was a bit of a surprise, because for many years now I have thought that I was 5'6" -- I can't remember now where I got that inaccurate measurement.

Tuesday, January 21st: The public university where I work offers a film studies class that screens a film each week, and is open to the public. I have been going to these showings ever since I first took the class myself, several years ago. The first movie this semester was Bridget Jones's Diary, which I happen to love. Mitch is taking the class this semester, so I sat by him, and we chatted a bit. Turns out, that he had read the book but had never seen the movie. One funny thing we noticed -- in the film, all the computers are Apples, but in Bridget's office they use a Microsoft instant messaging program.

Wednesday, January 22nd: I went to my first reference assistant's meeting. It was pretty cool. We had some good discussions about different things -- it wasn't a bitchfest like the chief clerks meetings that I have been to on occasion. I went to the doctor, who confirmed that I have a sinus infection, and wrote me some scripts. I like my new doctor, she is a petite Latina named Corazon. She is really easy to talk to, and both times that I have been to see her, I've made her laugh.

After work, I went to the gym at the university to walk on the treadmill. I did an hour of an up-and-down course, and then a half-hour of a smooth course. I must remember to bring a book next time -- they have tvs, but they were showing The Bachelorette and then Celebrity Mole. Ugh.

Thursday, January 23rd: After work, I went to a step aerobics class at the gym, and then did the abs class that follows right after. I was by far the oldest and fattest person there, but strangely, I didn't give a shit what the kids thought about me. The next day, my abs didn't hurt at all, but the second and now third day after, I'm feeling it. Ouch.

Saturday, January 24th: We were supposed to go to Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight, but it was postponed until next week for some unknown reason. I'm was kind of disappointed at first, but since it is still going to happen, I don't really mind too much. Mitch will be going -- this will be his first Rocky experience (watching the DVD does NOT count).

There was a story on NPR the other day about how a zoo added a new group of penguins to an exhibit, and now all the penguins are swimming in circles all day everyday for no apparent reason. Looks like the behavior has spread to a new species...

  1. Where do you currently work?
The public library (full-time) and a university library (part-time) doing reference.

2. How many other jobs have you had and where?
Lots. First job was from 14 to 16, bussing tables at an upscale restaurant. At 16, I got a job with a local ice cream chain, and worked my way up to shift manager there. My freshman year of college, I worked at the university library. At 19, I switched to a pizza place, and worked there until I got a job at the university library. I couldn't get enough hours at the university, so I started working at a local independent bookstore chain as well. Went full-time at the bookstore, and gave up the library job. Got on part-time at the public library, so I worked at both the bookstore and the library. After a year or so, I was able to get on full-time at the library, but the pay sucked, so I have also worked part-time at the bookstore, for the U.S. Census, at Lane Bryant, and at the university library since then. All this doesn't even include volunteering at the public library and various school libraries since I was about 11.

3. What do you like best about your job?
Helping people. I find it really satisfying.

4. What do you like least about your job?
The pay could be better. It would be nice to not need a second job.

5. What is your dream job?
Still working on that one...

I have to wonder if this homepage is for real -- it reminds me of the one about the Middle Eastern guy where they had actually taken his real page and messed it all up for fun.

OMG! Fake British Guy just walked up to me and asked if the computer next to me was available. I pointed out the jacket left on the back of the chair, and told him that I thought that that meant that the guy was coming back, so he moved on. I should have said, "Sure it is! Sit right down!" Damn!

Just heard on NPR minutes ago... The next Harry Potter book will be released June 21st, and is 768 pages! Woot! Here's an article about it.
Still, some observers wonder if there may a falloff in readership because Ms. Rowling's original readers are now five or six years older than they were when they first became enamored with the series.
What kind of morons are these people? Yeah, it has been five years, and now you have a whole new set of kids to discover Harry Potter, plus all the old readers! Let's see, I was 24 when I read the first book, and I'm 29 now, and I'm still thrilled to bits at news of the new one...

I've upgraded to Blogger Pro, and I'm supposed to be able to blog via email now. Since I can email from my cell phone, this sounded like a great idea, but I sent a test message about an hour ago, and it has never come through. Damn. I was really looking forward to blogging via email from the peace rally in DC this weekend!

Argh! I was a half-hour late for my class tonight, instead of a half-hour early. Why? Because IUPUI, which is located in Indianapolis, posted all of the class times in Eastern Standard Time, instead of what time it would actually be at each site! I mean, geez, would it have killed them to add "EST" after the time to clue us in?!

Saw The Transporter this evening with Mitch, and his friends, Matt and Brian. I have seen three movies recently with really ridiculous stunts in them. The first was Die Another Day, the new James Bond film. I love a good Bond flick, but I found myself rolling my eyes several times at some of the unbelievable stuff... Then I saw xXx, which totally blew Die Another Day away in the unbelievable-bullshit-stunts department! If I had seen The Transporter between Die Another Day and xXx, it would have fit in perfectly. Transporter did have a nice car chase sequence, but it was no Ronin. And BTW, where was Jean Reno?! You can't have a Luc Besson movie without Jean Reno!? Was he busy making Les Visiteurs 3, ou quelque chose comme ca?!

Friday, January 10th: Matt J. and I decided instead to go to the mall, and then go read at the megabookstore. When Mitch arrived back in town, he stopped there to see his friend Matt who works there. I told him to come over and meet Matt J. before he left. When he and his friend Matt finished talking, I introduced Mitch to Matt J. Mitch pulled up a chair, and we started talking. We hardly noticed when Matt excused himself to go get some more coffee, and didn't notice at all that he never came back. We chatted for an hour, and then all went home because the store was getting ready to close. Mitch gave me a "definite maybe" on going out with the gang on Saturday, because while he had been away at his job interview, Matt and their other friends had decided to have a LAN fest the next day, and Mitch was going to have to run it.

Saturday, January 11th: I emailed Mitch asking him to please let me know something before it was time for everyone to meet that evening, so I would know whether to expect him or not. Six thirty came and went and I still hadn't heard from him. Angel asked me if I thought that he would come. I said, "Either he's coming but he's late -- which he's never late. Or he's being inconsiderate." Finally, almost an hour after we got to Denny's, he messaged my phone asking me to call him when we were leaving Denny's. I called, got his voice mail, and left him a message telling him that we were headed to the megabookstore to kill some time, and then were going to see Jackass: the Movie at 9:20.
We hung out at the megabookstore, talked to Angel's friend Amanda, who works there and, it turns out, wants to be a librarian. This is very cool as she is a kind of alternative chick, most definitely not your stereotypical librarian. We need more like her.
As we were about to leave for the theater, I called Mitch, afraid that he hadn't got the earlier voicemail (he rarely checks). He answered instantly, as he had been calling me that very moment. I picked him up and we met Todd, Angel, and Ryan at the theater.
The movie. Wow. All I can say is that was one of the most disturbing things that I have ever seen, and that those guys are pretty f*cked up.

My mother has been demanding a photo of Mitch...

Daylight Savings Time

Here in Indiana we have three different time arrangements:

1. 76 counties use Eastern Standard Time year-round
2. Eleven counties (including ours) use Central Standard/Daylight Savings Time (we turn our clocks forward in Spring, and back in Fall)
3. Five counties use Eastern Standard/Daylight Savings Time (they turn their clocks forward in Spring, and back in Fall)

What all this means is that at various times of the year, we are an hour behind most of the state. For instance, this afternoon, when Matt tried to call Indy at 4pm, the office that he was trying to reach was closed, because it was 5pm there. In some counties, they have what they call "legal time" and "illegal time". Legal time is the time as mandated by state law, but is only respected by government offices -- the rest of the county runs on illegal time, usually because they are on the edge of a time zone, and they work, go to school, shop, etc. in an adjacent county in the other time zone. In some counties, part of the county is on legal time, and part is on illegal time. For instance, in Spencer County, the town of Rockport does not use Daylight Time, while the town of Dale, just a few miles north, does use Daylight Time.

Surveys show that the vast majority of Hoosiers would like the entire state to be on the same time, but the disagreement comes in when you ask which time we should all be on. Every year, bills are presented in the state legislature to correct this situation, but every year they fail. Every election season, it's an issue that candidates must take a stand on, but in the end, nothing gets done about it.

  The Friday Five

1. Where are you right now? At a Gates terminal in a public library branch. (I'm off work today, but I'm hanging out at the library... Geez, I really need to get a computer at home.)

2. What time is it? 4:00 pm Central Standard/Daylight Savings Time

3. What are you wearing? Khaki pants, a dark red paisley blouse, and red suede loafers.

4. Any people or animals around you? Describe them. Well... (sneaks a look) To my left are two librarians, straight ahead of me are two teenagers surfing the web, a white guy and an Indian girl, to my right is a teenage guy looking at videos, a local cop waiting to check out a book, a woman checking out books, and the library clerk waiting on her.

5. What are your plans for the weekend? Hmm... Tonight, watch Part Six of The Flambards with Matt J. and his mom. Tomorrow, work 8-5 and then go to Denny's and a cheap movie with the gang and Mitch.

While chatting with Mitch yesterday, he asked me if I would take a look at his resume for him.
Me: Sure. Applying for a new job?
Mitch: I have a job interview with S**** tomorrow.
Me: I've never heard of them.
Mitch: They're in Indianapolis, I'm driving up there for an interview tomorrow.
Mitch: If I get the job, I will be moving up there.
They will probably offer him the job, and he will go. Just when things were looking so promising... What did I do to deserve this? How could I accumulate so much bad karma?

  Mitch emailed:
Did you see our percentages? Wow. :)

So I looked at the comparison of our test results...
"When it comes to Love, Mitch is 76% compatible with you...

Wow, when's the wedding? Will you be serving those little quiche things with bacon bits? We love those."

Mitch sent me some links to tests at emode:
Kate, you're an Observer!

That means you're one of the more kind-hearted people around. You are unusually intuitive, and you probably understand yourself, as well as others. That also means you're a good mediator — though you may prefer to spend more quiet time on your own than most.

Because of the self-knowledge you already possess, you are better equipped than many to steer your life in the right direction. Understanding more about the components of your personality will reveal unique information that even people like you might not realize. And the better you know yourself, the more confident you'll be making decisions that affect your life.

How do we know this about you? Because while taking the test, you answered questions that measure the basic traits that make up your personality. We scored your answers on different personality characteristics and discovered not only that you're an Observer, but where you stand on those proven scientific scales.

Are you ready to explore why you thrive when you're helping someone, or why you're motivated by things other than money? Then read about it in the full, 10-page, personalized report we generated for you.

When you know more specifics about who you are and what you want, you'll be able to cut through the chaos of life and get to the core of what matters to you. It will help you shed light on your past, and prepare you for your future.

And according to The Passion Predictor:
Kate, you're a Snugglebunny!

When you're in love, the whole world knows it. The excitement of romance shines from your eyes. After all, love is grand. And so is intimacy, whispering sweet nothings, the occasional PDA, and the joy of being cuddled up and cozy with your partner...Yikes. Is that a sugar headache coming on? Keep reading for more about your love style...
Then, the scary part:
Your test results have matched you with these EmodeMatch members in your area.

  Cool Tool
Stumble Upon is a browser add on where you can rate websites, and see websites that other people have recommended.

  Wikipedia
I had used Wikipedia before, but it wasn't until wikis came up in a discussion on the Digital Reference listserv that I finally understood how totally cool it is. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can contribute to it! No logins, no permissions, just click on the "Edit this page" link and go for it. It's anarchy! There is potential for people to go in and really mess things up, but so far I have seen no evidence of that.

Saturday, January 04, 2003

Well, the Mitch sitch seems to be finito. Too bad, I really liked him, and I thought that he really liked me, but early this week we ran into difficulties, and cannot seem to get them straightened out. It was nice while it lasted.

Update (1/5/03): I had messaged Mitch Friday night, and not gotten a response. Then Saturday morning, I left a voicemail asking him if we could get together and talk, to which he didn't respond. Finally, I got an email from him telling me that he lost his cell phone Friday afternoon. He never got the messages, which explained his silence. Anyway, he told me that he had just come out of a long-term relationship and he's not ready to jump into another one yet. After feeling so wretched all this week, I feel the same way, this has happened too quickly and it has been too intense. He says that he wants to try just being friends, and I'm totally cool with that. I told him though that I'm taking him at his word, and I will start treating him like a friend, so if he didn't mean it to tell me now, not come back in a month or two and say, "I didn't really want to be friends, that's just something that you say..."

  C.S.I. and librarianship

Last night, I watched C.S.I. for the first time. The episode had two storylines, one of which was about a librarian murdered while she was at work. Now, Meg has been singing the praises of C.S.I. for ages, and has had pretty much every guy on the show as a Boyfriend of the Week, so I was jazzed to see not only my first episode of C.S.I., but one taking place in a library! Boy, was I disappointed. The victim was a preservation librarian, and was pretty much a bimbo. Her boss was your stereotypical administrator. And the (apparently) only other employee was a "high-functioning autistic" guy with an MLS. This guy was the main character of this storyline, and he was creepy. Geez, I'd take the old spinster librarian stereotypes over these three any day!

  Misadventures in Librarianship...

A big part of my job is rebooting the public access internet terminals. The machines are old and slow (mostly Pentium IIs) and the patrons tend to favor sites with lots of pop-up ads, which make the computers freeze up. My boss uses the on/off button to reboot, but I'm afraid that I will break a nail, so I prefer to stick the tip of a golf pencil in the little reboot hole on the front panel. Well, today I did this with a pencil stub that had been sharpened in a regular pencil sharpener and had a long tip on it. The tip broke off inside the computer, and got stuck there. The computer was stuck somewhere between on and reboot. I tried poking around in the hole to free it, but it was stuck fast. Oh my god, I was thinking, what am I going to do?! I broke one of the computers! So I started looking at the front panel of the machine, and feeling around to see where it was screwed on...but there were no screws. I popped the bottom half of the panel off and the pencil lead fell free. The reboot began, I replaced the cover, and breathed a sigh of relief. Crisis averted.

  The Friday Five

1. Do you wear any jewelry? What kind? Rarely. Sometimes earrings, occasionally a ring or a necklace.

2. How often do you wear it? See above. I actually have quite a bit of jewelry, but I can never find any, it's scattered all over the house.

3. Do you have any piercings? If so, where? Just my ears, and only one set of holes. Though it was considered pretty scandalous when I had them pierced in the second grade. The holier-than-thou teacher let me know that she disapproved, and didn't think much of my mother for letting me get it done.

4. Do you have any tattoos? If so, where? No.

5. What are your plans for the weekend? I don't have any at this point...

I just noticed that I had messed up the dates on my posts, and forgotten to tell about the weirdest thing that happened...

Thursday, December 26th: After work, Mitch went home and took a nap. When he woke up around eight, he called and asked me if I wanted to go to Denny's and Wal-Mart with him. We met at Denny's, ate, and had great conversation, as usual. At Wal-Mart, he was shopping for DVDs, and we spent a long time in the DVD aisle looking for the ones he wanted and talking about movies. When we went to check out, there was a long line, but we were talking while we waited, and having a good time. Suddenly, Mitch noticed that he had accidentally picked up a fullscreen version of a movie -- he prefers widescreen like I do -- and went to switch it.
As soon as he walked away, the woman in line in front of us turned to me and asked, "Are you two dating?"
A bit surprised by this, I said, "Um, yeah..."
"Well, I couldn't help overhearing you back in the DVD aisle and then here in line, and you two have the most interesting conversations! I thought to myself, if these two aren't dating, they should be! This isn't your first date is it?"
"No, no, more like our fifth..."
"That's good. If you two were just friends, I was going to tell you that you should go out."
Then, she suddenly went off on a tangent about how two of her friends had met and married through the internet, which was when Mitch rejoined us. She moved up then to check out, and was really chatty with the checker, making me think that they knew each other. After she left, I recounted the entire conversation to Mitch, and the checker asked us if we knew her...it turns out that she didn't know her either. Bizarre.

  Happy New Year?

Well, yet again spent New Year's Eve without a date. Let's see, in 1990 Brian and I had recently broken up. In 1991, I was here with my family and my boyfriend Dennis was back in Indianapolis. In 1992, Brian and I had broken up for the second (and final) time. 1993-2001, no guy in the picture around the holidays. I thought that this year I might break the streak, but Mitch spent New Year's with his mom. I understand, she's all alone, she needs him there more than I need him here. That's fine. (Though Mitch was having trouble sending me messages on my phone, so I was stressed out most of the day wondering why he hadn't contacted me.) So instead, I had dinner with Matt's family and then we watched movies until midnight.
